Two Nice Surprises

Yesterday we were fortunate to stay in a campground that had small cabins to rent as well as tent space. The owner of the campground was nice enough to offer them to our group as no cost because of the rainy weather. It was nice to be able to charge our equipment and have table to type on as well. During the evening I was woken up by the rain as it came pouring down for 15 or 20 minutes. As we left the camp grounds several of us decided if rain was threatening and the destination campground had cabins, then it would be smart to rent a cabin again.

The ride started off cold and gloomy but at least it wasn't raining. The clouds even parted a bit and the Sun started to show through and even began to warm us a bit. The good part was that we were heading for the most part South-East and the wind was pushing us right along. Maybe I jinxing things, but we've had 4 days of favorable winds.

At about 37 km from the start outside the town of Millicent it started to drizzle. Dashing though town we found a coffee shop called, "Java Cafe" where we waited out the shower and when Sun came out, we departed again.

The lunch was at about the 72 km point. I arrived just in time to help Christian chase out the lunch canopies that had been launch over the top of the lunch van by the gusty wind. After a couple of PB&J sandwiches I was ready to go as I was starting to get chilly.

A couple of kilometers later we were in the town Mount Gambier where a McDonald's promised hot coffee. After a long black (an Americano for Starbucks fans) it was time to head off to see the Blue Lake. A local landmark that was formed from volcanic activity thousand and thousand years ago.

At that point we only had about an hour more to the campground. The wind pushed up and down the rolling hills. It would have been even better if the tandem tractor trailers went zipping buy us every couple of minutes.

We had two nice surprises waiting for us at the camp ground. First, hot vegetable soup that really warmed us up and second, Charlie had gotten a cabin at the campground where five of us will be spending the night. It’s been very nice sitting here with the other riders talking about the upcoming elections and such as the rain showers down outside. The ride briefing will be at 7 PM this evening where we’ll find out more about tomorrow’s ride to Port Fairy.
